Quick tips for taking care of your houseplants

I went to a friend's house last week--he has a beautiful garden. It made me feel like I was at Aerith's house in the video game Final Fantasy VII: Remake. I was in awe of how well-maintained verdant and lush the backyard looked! I'm inspired to have more plants so that when I have my own backyard someday, I will also feel like I've stepped into a mystical fantasy world that stimulates having a rich imagination. In honor of that dream, here are some tips for caring for the plants you already have!

Care Tips for Thriving Plants

  1. Light: Match your plant to your home’s lighting conditions. Most plants prefer bright, indirect light, but low-light-tolerant options like pothos or snake plants are forgiving. (This is why these ones are my favourite!)

  2. Watering: Overwatering is a common mistake. Check the soil before watering—most plants prefer soil that’s slightly dry between waterings.

  3. Humidity: Tropical plants like monstera or calathea enjoy higher humidity. Misting or placing a tray of water near them can help.

  4. Potting: Use well-draining soil and pots with drainage holes to prevent root rot.

  5. Fertilizing: Feed plants with a balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer) to encourage growth.

Common Challenges and Solutions

  • Yellowing Leaves: Often a sign of overwatering or poor drainage. Check the soil and adjust your watering routine.

  • Pests: Spider mites and mealybugs can appear. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth or use neem oil for treatment.

  • Drooping: Could indicate underwatering, too much sun, or shock from a new environment. Assess light and water conditions.

Bringing Nature Indoors

House plants are more than just a trend—they’re a way to connect with nature, improve your environment, and nurture something living. Whether you’re a seasoned plant enthusiast or a beginner, there’s a plant for every lifestyle and space. Start small, experiment, and enjoy the process of watching your indoor jungle grow.
